Lots and lots of grannies

Last week was great. But now the real world calls.
It was mine and Josh’s vacation. No work, no school for Dylan, and pretty much no responsibilities for a change! I almost didn’t know what to do with myself!
Aside from being complete lazy slobs and sitting around playing Playstation all day, I managed to find time to pick up a new hobby.
This is going to be a granny square blanket for Dylan – in his school colors of course! I’m on square #8 right now (I think, hell I have a stack already and I’m not sure). Dare I say I *think* I’ve pretty much mastered the granny square now. I like them. Which is good, because according to my measurements, 10 squares wide by 12 squares tall = 120 FREAKING SQUARES. Damn. Maybe I’ll have it completed by the time he’s in high school. But then these wouldn’t be his school colors anymore. DOUBLE DAMN.
I told Josh I needed to teach him how to crochet these things so we could get it done in half the time. He didn’t much like the idea.
I really enjoy crocheting so far. Now that I know how to knit AND crochet (sort of), I can’t decide which I like better. The stitches are so different yet both are equally awesome.
For those of you that do both, which do you prefer and why?
For those of you that have absolutely no interest in my old lady hobbies, what is something new that you’ve learned to do lately?
I blog about my daily adventures, crafting (knit/crochet), art, photography, & more. I'm sometimes funny, sometimes somber, sometimes neither, but always myself.

I prefer crochet when I want to make stuffies or anything quick. I’m much faster at crochet. (Which is odd bc I’ve been knitting longer.)
And I prefer knitting just for sheer awesomeness. You can make SO MUCH. Socks, sweaters, etc. The list goes on. lol

I love love love crocheting. But I’ve never learned how to knit, so I can’t really say which I would like more sadly.

I love to knit and crochet! The Plankton you made was adorable! :) I love the blanket too. Can’t wait to see the finished project!

Jealous! I’ve tried to crochet. I just can’t seem to get it right. And I’m just trying a basic square! How did you learn? Did you use a book? Or did someone teach you.
I dig old lady hobbies in a big way.

Thank you! =) I purchased the “I Taught Myself Crochet” kit at Wal-Mart for $10. You can find it in the craft department, but I think that Michael’s and Hobby Lobby also carries it. That’s where I learned the basics.
As for the granny square, I learned from this awesome YouTube video – check it out, it really helped me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvkwTDtH1Vc

I think it would be so cool to make my own “granny quilt”. My Grandma made me one, it would be cool to turn around and make my own. I might check out that book!
Thanks for the add on Google Reader , I added you back :) Looking forward to reading more (and seeing more squares!)
How long does it take to do one? How do you connect them all?

The book is definitely worth the $$$. And where the book doesn’t help, I turn to trusty YouTube, lol.
I’m getting pretty fast at them, so I can complete one from start to finish in about 10 minutes.
From what I understand, there are a few different ways to connect them, but the method I plan to use is the single crochet join. Where you line up all your pieces and crochet around the edges. =)

Love the colors! My mom and grandma crochets so I decided to learn how to knit instead. =D They are terrible at giving directions. I opted for the Walmart Learn to Knit $10 packet thing and away I went.
I used to stitch the granny squares together for my mom when she’d make blankets. And I could do the chain stitch, but that’s about all I know of crochet. I’ll get around to learning it eventually, but I rather knit at the moment. I still have a lot of skills to learn with it although I’m stuck making wrist warmers like a maniac right now. I love them!
Your plankton is SO cute, by the way. I’ve never tried making little toys before but I have a feeling I will be trying them next year. =D Hurray for crafting!

Thank you, thank you! Crafting is definitely awesome. I’d do it all day long if I could get away with it.
Those Wal-Mart kits are totally worth the money. I like how the instructions are clear and to the point. And like I mentioned above, where the book lacks in certain specific methods, I always turn to YouTube, lol. I love knitting up quick little projects. Never tried a wrist warmer, but I will definitely have to now. =)

I just started teaching myself to crochet this year and I love it. I don’t know how to knit as I’m not very good at using both of my hands, but one day (after I get better at crocheting) I’ll give it a shot! :)

Isn’t it fun? =) I love both crafts, and I learn something new every time I pick it up it seems like.
