Voice activated texting is the next big thing
07/06/10 · Filed in Daily Grind
Josh and I were watching the news the other night, listening to the reporters endlessly lecture about the dangers of texting while driving. Seems like that’s the hot topic every single night these days. To me, the dangerous consequences of texting and driving (or doing anything while driving other than watching the road) are common sense. The fact that people run into things and kill themselves while in the middle of a “omg i’m totally going to buffalo wild wings rite now and driving with my knees lolololol” text is not breaking news.
But I digress. So they were going on about ways to “prevent” the hazards (oddly, the suggestion of shutting the hell up and paying attention to the damn road was never mentioned) when Josh turns to me and says,
“You know, I get tired of hearing about this. Why won’t phone manufacturers just create a voice-to-text type thing so that you can talk to the phone and it will type out your text?”
“Oh, you know I think I heard about that,” I said, “it’s called the telephone. Really revolutionary. You dial this number and then you can actually friggin TALK to the person on the other end! No typing required! Like you can hear their voices and everything!”
He had a look on his face that said ‘I want to punch you in the face right now’ and ‘I can’t believe I just said that’ simultaneously.
Why make it hard by finding 5623529 different indirect ways to communicate with another person?
To sum it all up: Smart phones are both insanely awesome and incessantly annoying. And unlike every news anchor you’ve ever watched, I’m not going to lecture about not texting while driving. But I will say that if anyone ever mows me down on the highway because they couldn’t bear the thought of unplugging from their precious Twitter or funny IM with the person in the back seat, they’re going to need an app for removing shards of plastic from their ass. And remember, where others don’t, Droid does.
I blog about my daily adventures, crafting (knit/crochet), art, photography, & more. I'm sometimes funny, sometimes somber, sometimes neither, but always myself.

I think I love you ;).
So spot on.

It’s against the law here to text or talk on the phone while you’re driving so neither really happens that often, I think. Especially since it *is* such a common sense thing (that shouldn’t require an actual law).
Anyway… I TOTALLY agree with you on this. Texting (etc.) while driving causes entirely unecessary harm to others.

Ha! Give them a blackberry dingleberry.
Okay, maybe that was a bit much. But I totally get your sentiment. People who play on their phones while driving make me crazy.

The T-Mobile MyTouch Slide has a “genius button” that lets you text someone by saying their name and the message. lol
It annoys me when people try to text while driving down the road. It’s like.. Don’t you know you’re an accident waiting to happen?!

I LOL’d IRL at this. :) However, I see his point too. I have a diagnosed phone phobia and hate talking, even to people like my mom, on the phone. So something like a voice to text option would make me happy. :D

It really bugs me when I see people using their phones while driving. It’s against the law to do so, but people still do it.
There never seem to be any come backs of breaking that particular law, so people just do it anyway.
I don’t even drive but during my lessons my entire mind is on the road, to the point sometimes I switch off and don’t even hear my instructor saying things. How can people drive and pay attention with a phone in their hand? Grr!

I will be the first to admit that my iPhone is always in my hand. I’m a tweeting queen!
BUT I never do that shit while driving. In fact, I don’t even like to TALK on my cell while driving.
They do have something that will do voice-to-text but it’s really annoying and just to even use it, you have to push all these buttons anyway so it kind of defeats the purpose of being “safe.”
This was an awesome post!

HAHA Droid does. That’s good.
I’m not going to lie. I am totally guilty of texting while in my car. At a light maybe! I don’t do it while I’m driving. No way. If I wrecked my car I’d never forgive myself. Especially if I hurt someone else.

that whole talking into the phone thing is revolutionary!!!
Of course, I’m so old school I have never sent a text *hides head*

Such a great post, and I couldn’t agree more. If people can’t wait to text their friends while they’re driving then they shouldn’t drive in the first place.

LOL @ the telephone. I’ll admit, I’m a huge texter..just cause it’s easier to just send a quick message and respond when you can. I’ll text at stop lights, but never while driving.
